CD Package Design

I had to physically construct a CD package that consisted of multiple panels and also present a flat version. this was my final project.

the booklet

Era vs. Era Posters

For this assignment my class was to create two versions of posters for two eras in graphic design history. I chose to design for art nouveau and russian Constructivism. the idea is that the two different eras should be opposite styles from each other.

swap file #2: logos

#1

Imaginova is a "digital media and commerce company," which deals with new technology. I think the logo fits their market. The star, sun or light is desined in pixels which is what a light might look like through a lens or piece of technology. Imaginova is writen with a modern and scientific typeface which also fits their business products.

#2

I am commenting on the "orange" logo. I dont know who it was created for but it appers to be made with a modern typeface. The leaf added to the "g" shows the viewers that it is refering to the fruit. The roundness of the typeface makes the logo inviting and engaging.

#3

I am referring to the logo Jay bird. The simple symmetrical design is what  refers to their name (it is what is placed on the products). The typeface of Jay bird is interesting and not plain. Just like the lines don't fully connect in the symbol, the line of each letter does not connect, creating similarity.

swap file #2: CD sleeve

This is the cover of Keane.

This is the inside sleeve of Keane's album.  On the other side are the songs listed. The design is absolutely beautiful. It was designed by Sanna Annukka, who is an illustrator and a printmaker. I think it looks like an "iron sea."

swap file #2: book jacket

book jacket:

The book jacket for Everything is Illuminated reminds me of the first graphic design project i had this year. Its figure ground is ambiguous. I like how the front is the opposite of the back, in that its upside down and the negative of the cover. (If you click on the link under the picture you can see this full book jacket and other covers). I also like the cover of Dot Bomb; it illustrates the title of the book. I am not promoting these books in any way, i have not read them. I simply and commenting on Jonathan Gray's work.

swap file #2: motion graphics

#1

The introduction to Stranger than Fiction shows motion graphics in a way that allows the viewer to see what the main character is thinking.

#2

This motion graphic video also contains some typography. I like the way the lines move and interact with the letters throughout the video.

swap file #2: symbol design

#1

This is the symbol for radioactive material. It was designed to look as though
radioactive material was "radiating from an atom". They have now changed the color from magenta to black or other colors.

#2

I do not know who created the design for this pack of cards, but i like the way they decorated the spade. They took the symbol of spade and created an interesting design. The typeface of block lettering gives them an ancient feel.

swap file #2: magazine

I picked this magazine because i like how the orange stands out because everything else is  basically black and white. In the word "George" the man's head is over the letter "o" which is the same shape.
#1

This web layout is visually appealing and interesting. When you scroll over the names in the list to the left each location is shown with a star.

#2

i chose this site for its color palette and the typeface of the name.

#3

In this hotwheels page all the colors flow with each other. The red stands out.
#4

This page is outlined with a white line that is interesting because it looks painted on with a straight edge. The black and white values make the page look unlike a normal any day webpage.
#5

The typeface in this page is what makes it interesting. I probably would not have picked i white background for the page.

swap file #2: print ads

3 print ads:

#1

This is a creative way to advertise. This ad makes the viewer
begin to search for what the man has lost in the drain.

#2

The text in the print says "VOLVO for life." This volvo add is very good advertising. It gets their point across.
#3

This is an eye catching ad, because of the bright colors and int
eresting design.

#4

This print is one of favorites of the ones that i have picked. I like the colors chosen and the layout of everything.

more advertising i found interesting:

swap file #2: television commercials

#1 Sprint

Sprint did a great job on this commercial!
The idea of knowing the score from your phone
was actualized with the miniature stadium.
This is a great example of motion graphics.

#2 Bridgestone

This commercial grabs your attention because
everybody is screaming. Bridgestone's logo and name
is given at the end to claim it as their own.

#3 Doritos

Its easy to tell the use of Photoshop a program much similar.
The style of the design (everytime they freeze the video to
give the people a title) goes well with the Doritos design
on the bag.

project#2

Five typefaces that i find interesting:
1> Eurostyle. Its rather modern and is good for type in a paragraph. It is a san serif typeface. Its fairly easy to read yet is different from the normal simple typefaces. The letters are taller and still somewhat wide enough so your eye doesn't get lost as you read. The curves are not round but rather curvy squared. It could be used in a flyer to give the event a modern feel.
2> Distro. This is also more of a modern typeface but appears as though each letter is a reflection off of a shiny surface. There are some straight edges but the are more curves on each letter. For example, on the letter "f," the 90 degree angle between the line that horizontally crosses the vertical is not a straight corner but a curve. This is also a san serif typeface.
3> Galahad. This is a typeface where the capital letters are relatively large compared to most othe capitol letters. The lower case letters are smaller than most other typefases. When a capital and a lower case letter are viewed next to each other, the capital more than usually stands out. Galahad is a san serif typeface, and differs from a basic typeface because it is styalized in that each letter's width varies as though a pen was tilted barred down hader to write in some areas.
4> Lucida Blackletter. This typeface is a block type, and resembles calligraphy. I find it interesting because it is simple and not too elaborate yet actually looks as though someone wrote with a basic calligraphy pen.
5> Harrington> I like this typeface  because its like oldstyle and serif, yet it adds curves and staright lines are made to look "ornate."

Nicole

I found this design on a website called WSDIA (We Should Do It All). POD was designed to be put on an architecture studio card in New York.  I chose this design because the designer, Nicole chose the right font for the logo. Each side of the pod is balanced with a unique dot.

Frederick design

This design was by Whitney Amelia Frederick and was made for the purpose of being printed onto a t-shirt. I chose to blog about her design because its purpose isn't  to represent a business or organization. It was designed as an artwork. I like the design because of the layout. The umbrellas float back into space creating a flowing line. The objects are elegant and add to the theme of wanting to float off into the sky.

paul rand design

minute_man.jpg

This design was created by Paul Rand for the U. S. Department of the Interior. I chose to blog about this design because of different aspects. The bold black "M" draws the viewers eye past the other brightly colored letters so they can not only begin to read "minute man," but also see the man in the "M." I like the design because of the plain font, which allows for a stylized figure of a man to become a focal point as well. The dark shaded "M" is balanced with the dark grey "N" at the opposite corner of the poster.

Woody Pirtle design

http://designarchives.aiga.org/?s1=2|s2=1|eid=5837

This design was made by Woody Pirtle and Jeff Weithman. I don't know the purpose for it, but i like this design because of the lines in the middle. The words that circle the Fancy curved symbol give the design a professional appearance.

jason schulte design

This design was made for the company Chaqwa, who provide coffee or tea. It was created by Jason Schulte Design. I chose to blog about this design because its so inviting. The pattern of the circles caught my eye and invited me into the picture. I'm sure that was their plan all along. By making the majority of it black and white they kept the design simple. A few dots of color makes the design modern and inviting.

Why am i a graphic design major?

I chose to be  graphic design major, mainly because i feel that God has opened the door for me and led me to this field of study. I feel called to be in the field of art because of the process in which i think. Anywhere i go, i always think of new ideas for designs or logos just by looking around. I truly enjoy graphic design work and helping others by creating the media they need.
